EDT and Industrial Cadets become Friends of The Queen’s Green Canopy

EDT and Industrial Cadets today announced a Friendship agreement with The Queen’s Green Canopy. The relationship will engage young people and ignite their natural interest in their local environment. As part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, students will be inspired through Industrial Cadets to plant trees across the UK.

Both organisations are patroned by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, bringing together his passion for sustainability, and ensuring young people have future employment options to help the country thrive. Planting trees through The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, combined with developing young peoples’ interests and skills in this area through Industrial Cadets, creates a lasting legacy, inspiring careers that are critical to help protect the planet for their future. We believe that working together will bring about greater long-term impact for this important year as Her Majesty The Queen celebrates the Platinum Jubilee.

“We are delighted today to announce the Friendship with The Queen’s Green Canopy. Our substantial school network will no doubt be excited about the opportunity to play their part in planting trees as part of this collaboration. As well as developing their students’ skills on the environment, they will also be celebrating achieving their Industrial Cadets Awards. Industry plays a critical role in our work, opening the eyes of young people on their career options that lead to growth sectors. This is an exciting development for us over the next academic year and will contribute significantly towards our ambitious movement of reaching 250,000 Industrial Cadets.” says Julie Feest, CEO of EDT and Industrial Cadets

The benefits of this new Friendship include:

  • EDT and Industrial Cadets using their existing links and network of schools across the UK to plant trees as part of their outreach activities.

  • Students enhancing their skills and pursuing their interests in the environment and climate change through a programme of activities.

  • Students celebrating their achievements with Industrial Cadets Awards, giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment for their contribution towards an important issue.

  • Linking this with COP26 and other environment focused programmes throughout the academic year and beyond.

“We are delighted that EDT and Industrial Cadets have agreed to become Friends of The Queen’s Green Canopy. With their extensive reach into schools across the United Kingdom, EDT and Industrial Cadets will greatly enhance The Queen’s Green Canopy’s schools and education outreach programme.”, says Dan Rex, CEO, The Queen’s Green Canopy.

About Queen’s Green Canopy: The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique, UK-wide tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, by inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.”

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools, organisations and corporates will be encouraged to plant trees from October 2021 when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage the planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, the QGC will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient

Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

The QGC will encourage everyone to learn more about the best way to plant trees so that they survive and flourish for years to come. Trees and hedgerows must be planted with care, at the right time of year, in the right place and with species that are not prone to prevailing tree diseases.

The QGC initiative will encourage planting during the official planting season, October to March, to optimise the chance of trees surviving and flourishing. People are encouraged to use the summer to plan their Jubilee tree planting projects and be ready for October.

The QGC project will also create a pilot training programme for unemployed young people

aged between 16-24 through Capel Manor College, London’s only specialist environmental

college of which The Queen Mother was Patron, to plant and manage trees.

The Queen's Green Canopy is honoured to have His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales as Patron.
