Placements

Offering young people the opportunity to gain professional development by working in industry

We help place school leavers and undergraduates with companies across the UK every year. The programme lasts for 10 -12 months (typically 12 months) and is a paid placement.

The Year in Industry has vacancies with companies working in technology, computing, science, engineering, business, marketing and finance across the UK – from leading FTSE 100 companies to small innovative start-ups. Around a quarter of all our students will secure university sponsorship each year or return to guaranteed vacation work with their host company. Many of our partner companies see The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate recruitment programme or an introduction to a future apprentice.

What will be involved?

You will be employed by an EDT partner company and work on projects that will enable you to gain valuable work experience and develop professional skills that employers are looking for.  You will receive full support from The Year in Industry through a volunteer mentoring service and the Placements Team for the duration of your placement year.

How it works
  1. Student submits application to YINI via web site and satisfies eligibility to work in the UK requirement. There is no fee for the student.

  2. Student completes EDT telephone interview prior to full acceptance on the scheme.

  3. Companies approach us outlining the kinds of roles they have / students they are looking for.

  4. EDT Placements team will search the registered students’ database to find suitable matches for companies and forward relevant CVs to the company. In some cases, we will contact universities / schools for specific candidates.

  5. The company will identify which students they would like to interview and when.

  6. The EDT will arrange and confirm interviews with students on behalf of the company.

  7. The company will interview the student and decide whether they want to offer a placement to the student.  If they do the EDT will relay the offer to the student.

  8. Once an offer is accepted, The EDT will assign a volunteer mentor to the student / company.

  9. Upon the student commencing their placement, the EDT will invoice the company for the placement fee.

Who is it for?

YINI is a resource for undergraduates and for school leavers (post A-Level/Higher/Advanced Higher or equivalents) who are looking for paid work placements within technology, computing, science, engineering and business (including finance, data analytics/science, marketing and economics).

Students can apply to the programme during their university studies for their industrial year out, or in their final year of A levels/ Highers/ Advanced Highers or equivalent study, for a year’s work experience prior to going to university or as a year to help decide on the future direction of their career - be that higher apprenticeship, university or work, or during their degree course itself.
