As an Engineering Year in Industry student, you will gain an understanding and appreciation of the engineer’s role within the Renewable Energy Industry on your placement, as well as understand the requirement for the multi-discipline approach to engineering and understand the basic competencies required to develop as an electrical or civil engineering professional.

 

The Year in Industry Engineer will undertake assigned technical activities and support the Onshore engineering construction team to deliver the project pipeline through the project delivery lifecycle of concept, feasibility, consent, construction & commissioning, providing technical assistance across the onshore business portfolio. There are various projects across technologies which you could be exposed to throughout your placement such as wind farms (new build, repower, life extension), as well as solar, battery storage and hybrid schemes, for example.

 

Whilst the role will focus primarily on supporting the engineering function, it may also include elements of supporting the Geographic Information System team and Energy Yield analysis team. Additionally, whilst working as part of the Onshore Projects & Construction team, this position may require periods where you will be based on-site during the construction phase of projects within the UK, or for periods of time when carrying out factory acceptance testing on equipment.

 

Discipline

 

  • Working towards or have obtained an Electrical or Civil Engineering degree qualification.
  • Or, completion of HNC or HND in Electrical/Civil, or general Engineering discipline
  • Basic ability to read and review technical drawings.
  • Basic ability to generate technical reports.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of basic principles of project delivery.
  • IT literate with the ability to operate MS office systems and other IT based project management software.
  • Required to hold a driving license and willing to work away from base office location as and when required.
  • Up to date passport and right to work in the UK.

 

Activities and Responsibilities

 

  • Support the engineering functions within the engineering organisation to aid the successful delivery of all engineering tasks.
  • Assist with the delivery of the Engineering deliverables to meet the requirements of the UK business and support engineering across the SPR Business from Origination, Development, Design, Construction, Commissioning and compliance.
  • Build working relationships within the Engineering team and wider SPR Business.
  • Encourage best practice in all activities.
  • Participate and promote positive H&S behaviours.
  • Ownership of personal development plan.
  • Assist project teams by participating with project development, and project designs. This is inclusive of Functional Design Specification (FDS) development, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and commissioning works.
  • Assist with the development of technical assessments for all technologies.
  • Assist engineering team achieve safe, reliable, and cost-effective design and operation of renewable energy assets.

 

Technical Skills/Knowledge

 

  • Aspiring to work towards degree qualification and in future incorporated or chartered engineering status.
  • Basic Engineering knowledge.
  • Basic knowledge of Hazards and Risks within the generation industry.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication standards.
  • Basic technical report writing and presentation skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Pro-active attitude and diligent approach. Self-starter who can work within the boundaries of a competency profile.
  • Ability to understand basic technical drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to work to within the boundary of allocated timelines.
