Non-Residential Insight into University Engineering, Built Environment and Computing at Sheffield Hallam University

What is it?

This course has been created in partnership with the School of Engineering & Built Environment and the School of Computing. You will develop your technical knowledge and problem-solving skills that are used by engineering, construction and computing professionals by completing a series of bespoke sessions including lectures, interactive labs, masterclasses and workshops. The skills gained from these sessions will be applied to solve areal-world challenge faced by the Sheffield city region, which could include infrastructure, housing, transport and sustainability.

What will I do?

SHU Racing Experience

Meet our Formula Student team and learn about the car, explore components like the engine and aerodynamics. You'll get hands-on experience by assembling & disassembling the rear wing, try virtual driving in a racing simulator, and compete in a timed pitstop challenge.

The Ultimate Frisbee

You will leave with a basic understanding of pressure, lift and drag and how that influences the flight of a throw and catch flying sports disc. Leading to a 'design, build, test' engineering task accessible to all, based on real engineering design parameters to introduce the concept of the design trade off.

Accommodation Challenge

Establish your understanding of the job roles in the built environment and construction. You will design and build a student accommodation facility and appreciate the impact of design on costs and income.

Digital Innovation

Explore how digital technologies enhance business strategy. Youwill discover how organisations use people, information and technology to staycompetitive and deliver value in a modern digital world.

Software Solution

Step into the shoes of professional software engineers and experience the full creative process to produce an application. You will design and build a functional mobile app prototype, applying principles of user-centric design to ensure every feature serves a real purpose.

Locking the Door

Uncover the hidden world of digital threats and learn how to protect the systems you create. You will explore the principles of cybersecurity and understand how organisations secure their data, users and technology. You may even take part in a digital investigation.

Who is it for?

This course is for students who are planning on going to university and are interested in subjects linked to engineering, computing or construction but are not quite sure on what university degree is right for them.

Who will be on this course?

Mixed course for 30 students.
