Is studying a STEM subject for me?

Learn more about what it’s like to study a STEM subject at university through hands on biology, chemistry and engineering practicals.

What’s it all about?

  • It’s hard to decide what you want to do with your life and taking on a university degree is a big step.  
  • This course gives you a taste of what it would be like to study a STEM subject at university.  
  • It will give you an idea of the types of things you would do as well as the potential for your careers afterwards.  
  • You will get the opportunity to experience a range of different STEM subjects and hopefully help you decide if STEM is for you.
  • You will also get the opportunity to meet some new people and learn some new skills.

What will I be doing?

  • Kingston University has state of the art facilities in a wide range of STEM subjects, including the chemical and pharmaceutical sciences, biosciences, engineering and computing.  
  • You will get the opportunity to carry out relevant, hands-on experiments in the different laboratories, you will get to listen to some talks and participate in some workshops.  
  • You will also get to discuss the options available to you after you finish your level 3 (A level, BTEC or equivalent course).  
  • The days will be packed with exciting activities, and you will get a good idea of what is involved in studying the different STEM courses.
  • For Biology, we will have a number of exciting activities including Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), how to measure calcium levels from a patient’s samples and Blood group cross matching to learn the importance of matching the correct blood groups to patients.
  • In chemistry we will look at how to make a simple drug like aspirin or how to make a polymer.
  • You will also get a chance to take part in some hands on engineering practicals to learn more about how engineers solve problems in the real world.

Would this course suit me?

This course is for students who are currently in year 11, who are enjoying the science subjects and would like to explore the possibility of studying a STEM subject at university. The Bioscience and Chemistry lab experiences will allow you to have a taste of what studying a course in Bioscience or chemistry would be like.

This course is non-residential and students must be able to travel to the university each day to participate (travel support available for eligible students).

University is located: Kingston University, Penrhyn Road Campus, Kingston-upon-Thames, KT1 2EE

You can take a train to either Surbiton or Kingston train stations and many buses come through Kingston. (85,57, 111, SL7, 65, 371 to name a few)
