Thirty-Five Schools Graduate as Bronze Industrial Cadets at Glasgow Celebration Event

Hundreds of students across thirty-five schools in Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and Clyde Valley have unveiled bold, real-world solutions to today’s biggest industry challenges after completing their Industrial Cadets Bronze Projects sponsored by Viridor.

S1 and S2 pupils took part in the 12-week programme, working in teams to tackle real-world challenges linked to sustainability, the circular economy and mental wellbeing. The Bronze project aims to give young people a practical insight into STEM careers while building confidence and employability skills.

The programme culminated in a celebration event held at Glasgow Caledonian University, where pupils presented their projects to industry experts, local stakeholders and teachers.

From innovative recycling ideas to creative solutions supporting wellbeing, the projects demonstrated the imagination and ambition of the region’s next generation. Judges praised the high standard of work and the pupils’ ability to apply STEM thinking to real-life issues.

On the day, winners included St John Ogilvie High School, Whitehill Secondary and Woodfarm High School for Project of the Year. Hillhead High School, Calderside Academy and Greenfaulds High School secured the Teamwork Award and Duncanrig Secondary were the People's Choice Winners.

Every student graduated from the programme with an Industrial Cadets Bronze accreditation, a nationally recognised award that highlights their skills and commitment to STEM learning.

As part of the experience, pupils also had the opportunity to visit Viridor’s Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre and Bargeddie facility, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at how waste is managed and transformed into valuable resources and low-carbon energy.

Viridor, which works in partnership with local authorities across Scotland, supported the programme to help inspire future talent and raise awareness of careers in the growing green economy.

Steven Don, Head of Local Authority Contracts Scotland for Viridor, said: “Viridor is delighted to be part of a partnership which offers young people from across the Clyde Valley (East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire), Glasgow and South Lanarkshire the opportunity to work on such an exciting project. The development of key skills and knowledge adds to the value of this important environmental project.”

Viridor have partnered with EDT for thirteen years, ensuring young people across Scotland gain access to the STEM industry.

By connecting education with industry, the Industrial Cadets Bronze Project helps equip students with the skills, knowledge and inspiration needed for future careers, while supporting the development of amore sustainable, circular economy.
