Supporting the GFG Foundation’s Commitment to a Carbon Neutral Economy

Our strategic partnership with the GFG Foundation began in2017 and aims to support young people in communities where they have a business presence to help them understand more about the local businesses, inspire the next generation and equip young people for the opportunities ahead.

Our most recent collaboration is the development of the GFG Foundation student programme with a focus on ‘Our sustainable community’. The programme took place over 16 weeks providing opportunities for students in years8 and 9 from local schools to take part in a mentored project supported by employees from LIBERTY Steel.

The project focused on sustainability and helped students navigate the expanding green jobs market, develop STEM skills, and build on their communication and presentation skills, as well as receiving their Industrial Cadets Bronze Award.

As part of the experience, students got the opportunity to attend a launch event, engage with mentors from industry and celebrate their achievements at an event at Sheffield Hallam University.

Impact

  • Spent over 7 years working in collaboration across multiple locations in the UK
  • Through our partnership, the GFG Foundation has supported over 8,500 students through various levels of the Industrial Cadet programme nationwide
  • Piloted and launched the GFG Foundation student programme, now well established in its fourth year supporting over 50 students from 5 partner schools each year.

Testimonial

“The GFG Foundation student programme, delivered by EDT, is so important as it gives students a valuable opportunity to develop STEM skills as well as key life skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership. All students taking part receive their Industrial Cadets Bronze award to demonstrate and celebrate their achievements. We work very closely with our students, aiming to open their eyes to the opportunities that exist within the ever changing and ever evolving industrial world. Our mentors from LIBERTY Steel UK play a crucial role in guiding the students through this journey, imparting their knowledge, kindness and passion for the industry, to bring on the next generation to be the best they can. It’s not all just hard hats and noise now, it's a very different skill set that is required.”
