Digital Skills in the Workplace

Stand out from the crowd and get the digital skills employers actually want!

The Digital Skills in the Workplace course is a comprehensive experience delivered virtually in February. Students can discover what digital skills will help them succeed in the workplace.

The course will include:
  • Live Q&A sessions with STEM professionals exploring digital careers.
  • Fun, interactive activities allowing the student to develop their skills and enhance their CV, application forms and/ or personal statement.
  • Get support from an industry mentor to complete a project using the student’s digital skills to solve an industry problem.
Course modules:
  • Work Based software: spreadsheets, professional emails, presentations, teams meetings, Power Bi.
  • Networking and Research: how to create a LinkedIn profile, how to research online effectively.
  • AI and Gamification: using AI in job search, using AI in research, how platforms use gamification to engage.
  • Internet safety: how to critically think online and internet safety.
  • Coding: TinkerCAD, Python and Scratch.
  • Digital careers including online live panel sessions with digital careers professionals and then the mentored project on a choice of four areas covered in the course, Data Analysis, AI, Coding or Research. 

At the end of the scheme, students graduate with a Silver Industrial Cadet Award, a nationally recognised award that students can use as evidence of their experience and take forward to complement their future applications and career journeys.

Course requirements
  • Students must be aged 16-21 and living in the North East or West Midlands areas of England.
  • The course is suitable for all abilities; all students need is a genuine interest in enhancing their digital skills for the workplace.
Course structure

Modular – the full course is approximately 30 hours to complete flexibly between 9th February and 9th March

Dates

Monday 9th February – Monday 9th March, with live sessions during half term weeks (16th– 27th February)

A fully funded course, subject to eligibility

Eligibility

  • Young people aged 16-21.
  • Living in North-East of England including County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.
  • Or living in the West Midlands including Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford and Wrekin, Warwickshire, West Midlands or Worcestershire.
  • Or living in Greater London
  • Priority given to students on or have been on free school meals/ pupil premium, IMD areas 1-3 (https://imd-by-postcode.opendatacommunities.org/imd/2019) care experienced young people, young carers.
