Baker Hughes supports Industrial Cadets pathways from Challenger to Gold

Baker Hughes is committed to supporting the communities where their colleagues live and work, contributing their time, skills, and resources to charitable causes and offering financial support through their foundation. The company’s priorities include improving equality of opportunity to education and driving diversity in STEM. Our integrated partnership has included Industrial Cadets accreditation of their GirlsGetSET programme and philanthropic support to enable young people from underserved communities and low-income families to access EDT’s programmes in the UK.

Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM, and the GirlsGetSET scheme aims to encourage girls to embrace Science, Engineering and Technology education and the exciting careers that follow, through inspiring outreach activities. The programme consists of multiple Science, Engineering and Technology-related activities run over an academic year, including face-to-face mentoring from women with careers in STEM, and hands-on projects in all-girl group environments.

Initially accredited at Industrial Cadets Bronze level, in 2024 it was extended to offer the most engaged girls the opportunity to earn an award at Silver level. The programme has now been developed even further, enabling some students to earn their Gold level award. This hugely successful programme has around 700 girls taking part annually.

Having worked closely together over the years, EDT was delighted to be awarded a grant of $25,000 from the Baker Hughes Foundation. This funding is enabling us to develop new programme content for primary schoolchildren and making our Industrial Cadets Challenger Experiences and school holiday programmes free to access for children and young people from low-income families and underserved communities, with 174 beneficiaries to date. In addition to building STEM skills and knowledge, the activities support young people to develop important skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem solving.

Testimonial

“The children gained a huge amount from the workshops -STEM awareness, team building, resilience and cooperation with others. Thankyou so much for giving our children this opportunity.”

Teacher feedback

We know how important it is for children and young people to have access to multiple, extra-curricular STEM opportunities so we’re thrilled that this partnership now reaches students across primary and secondary education, supporting them along their journey into STEM.

“STEM education is the foundation of innovation in the energy industry. By empowering the next generation with the skills to engineer cleaner technologies and drive sustainable energy development, we’re investing not just in talent but in the future of our planet. We are honored to support the impactful work done by EDT.”
