The virtual Routes into STEM course allows students aged 13+ (Yr 9 & 10 and S3 & S4) to recognise the variety of opportunities available to them after taking their GCSEs or Nat 5 and Highers, it will provide them access to key information on different pathways; college, university and STEM career. Diverse live interactive sessions will take place during half term or summer holidays allowing students to listen and ask questions to a variety of STEM professionals and student  ambassadors.  Students will also choose from a range of exciting projects, developed by our University and Industry partners, to work on during the course.

Industrial Cadets

On successful completion of the course, students will receive a Bronze Industrial Cadets award, enhance their CV and will be in a position to make a more informed decision about their future.

More about the course

The course can be completed around other commitments and studies to suits individual circumstances.  The course is open to all students aged 13+ (Yr 9 & 10 and S3 & S4) and it is suitable for all academic abilities. All that is required is a genuine interest in STEM subjects and inquisitiveness about what the future can hold for them.

The course will consist of the following core modules:


  • College – Discover the college pathway with exposure to a variety of colleges from across the UK with virtual tours, understand the application process including interview and gain understanding of the college apprenticeship route.

  • University – Explore universities from across the UK, learn about different STEM degrees, insight into university life with VLOGS from university students with lots of tours.

  • Company – Investigate into various STEM companies through videos, presentation and quizzes understand diverse types of careers and pathways you can take into the careers.

  • Project – Choose from a range of exciting STEM activities/projects, you must complete one nonetheless you can complete more.

  • Live sessions – Live sessions will take place over 1 week with the opportunity of at least one live session per day. There will be a variety of ones you can choose from: Mixed college panel, mixed university panel, early careers – here from apprentices/graduate, STEM professionals panel – hear from those who are later on in their career with the opportunity to understand their career journey …and more!

  • Careers Skills – Watching videos, taking part in activities, complete you workbook that will help you with understanding skills you already have, develop a CV/personal statement.

  • Graduation – On completion of all the modules on the course this will automatically enable you to graduate the Virtual Routes into STEM programme at Bronze level, you will need to complete a final questionnaire then download your digital certificate and badge.

Duration: Around 20hrs of flexible study to be completed during the course dates

Cost: £60.00 towards the cost of administration and the Industrial Cadets Bronze award.
