Job description

An exciting opportunity to learn in an environment where you will be fully involved and always supported. This position offers a  keen student valuable learning and advancement within Physics. You will be assisting in the development of new sensing technologies, based on principles including but not limited to ultrasonic, optical and electromagnetic. You will become an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with engineers who are experts  in their field to deliver exciting new technologies to the company. You will have access to top of the range equipment and research materials, enabling you to develop new skills and techniques which you will apply to the design and testing of prototypes. You will use your data analysis skills to evaluate results and informally present the findings through written reports and presentation to other research and design engineers in friendly meetings where your creativity can shine.

 

List of duties

The dynamic nature of research projects means that the successful candidate will be expected to be flexible and adapt to fit the needs of the team, often developing new skills in the process.

Specific activities may  include:

  • Completing literature reviews into fundamental principles and theory
  • Finite element modelling of concepts
  • Software programming to drive experiments or for data handling
  • Experimental design
  • Lab based experimentation and prototype testing
  • Analysis of results
  • Technical report writing
  • Presentation of results

As well as having a dedicated attitude and a keen willingness to learn, we require students who are enthusiastic, clear thinking, have initiative and are able to work independently.

You will be an organised, self-motivated individual who exhibits good verbal and written communication skills and applies an innovative and creative approach to problem solving.

 

Student specification Position and person requirements

  • Achieved (or expected to achieve) 3 A-levels including one science and mathematics of grade B or higher as well as grade C or higher in another subject.
  • Candidate should be aiming to undertake a degree in physics, engineering or chemical/natural sciences after completion of the placement.
