The candidate will form part of the Graphite Safety Case Branch, which works to demonstrate the safety of the Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGR) graphite cores.  They will work in the part of the group that is involved with graphite inspections and monitoring analysis.

The graphite core is the most significant life-limiting factor in the AGR fleet, and the work that the Graphite Branch does is unique as no other country in the world operates graphite moderated CO2 cooled reactors.  This position should appeal to someone wanting to get experience of original science in an industrial setting.

The graphite core structure is designed to act as a moderator and provide individual channels for fuel stringer assemblies, control devices and coolant flow – these are part of the high-level requirements of the reactor core for reactor operation, which are to:

  • provide a structure which, under all operating and fault conditions, ensures that the reactor can be shut down;
  • ensure adequacy of cooling for fuel, control rods, neutron sources, steel absorbers and the graphite must be maintained so that all materials remain within their design limits;
  • maintain unimpeded movement of fuel and control rods to ensure that the above requirements can be met.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/Description of Project/Post:


During the placement the candidate will undertake a number of projects to analyse data in support of the graphite core safety cases.  They will produce formal reports which will be critiqued by mentors and undergo the formal quality assurance process.  The opportunity to gain valuable experience in:

AGR reactor technology;

data analysis, numerical skills, software tools;

reporting, writing skills, presentations;

project management, and personal time management;

appreciation of safety cases and quality assurance.


The candidate will report directly to their supervisor, but with mentoring from the mentor or other Graphite Branch members will be expected to work independently on projects. 


Specific projects might include:

Analysis of fuel handling data

Investigating correlations between properties,

differences between stations;

Use/Testing/Developing of bespoke software

Risk log development for the materials test reactor




The Candidate should be highly numerate and good with computer programmes such as Microsoft Excel.  They should have an interest in applying maths and science to real data, be self-motivated, enthusiastic and be happy to work in an office environment.
