The company is looking for a student to join the company for a one-year placement. The successful Year in Industry student will complete three 4-month placements in different departments within the company in order to gain the appropriate breadth of experience and also to gain an appreciation of the diverse work undertaken at the Devonport site.

The Sector delivers a wide range of through-life engineering services to commercial and defence markets in the UK and overseas. With over 9,000 highly skilled people (of which around 4,500 are Devonport based) contributing extensive knowledge and experience, their collaborative approach to working with customers and suppliers aims to fully meet and exceed the customers’ needs and expectations. Working side by side with customers on concept design, project management, testing, assembly, maintenance and asset management, through to decommissioning, their aim to ensure their customers ultimate objectives and commitments are always achieved.
Ideally, you will be studying or planning to study a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Engineering, or similar. Your enthusiasm and motivation to achieve and learn will be a key aspect of your success at interview.
You will be IT literate, with Word, Excel, and Outlook being the key packages used. Experience of CAD/Cam would be advantageous.
You should be self-motivated, IT literate, confident, a good communicator with excellent verbal and written skills, have strong analytical skills and problem-solving abilities. Ideally you should have an interest in a manufacturing/marine environment and/or engineering, have some experience of design technology and be practical.
You will need to use your initiative, be prepared to “muck in”, be a team player and problem solver and get involved in the implementation of solutions.
You will have at GCSE or AS level good grades in Maths, Physics, Science and English and expect to get AS/A2 level grades particularly in Maths and Physics.
Please note that short-listed applicants will be invited to attend an assessment centre in Plymouth for two full days, date tbc.
