Looking to study or studying a relevant STEM discipline.

 

A Year in Industry Placement position is available to work within the Design Authority within the safety case team supporting Hinkley Point B and Hunterston B Nuclear Power Stations. The safety case team is based at Barnwood. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to learn about the operation of the two Power Stations and the wider Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor fleet and visit a station. The placement will allow the candidate to apply knowledge acquired during A levels / university studies to a range of projects. Examples include:

· Working with Hazards engineers in the group to understand the implications for the stations of low probability weather events.

· Working with Structural Integrity engineers in the group to understand plant material degradation issues, help in identifying solutions to identified material condition problems and preparing formal reports with recommendations for action

· Working with Probability Safety (PSA) engineers to justify reliabilities for inclusion into new or existing Nuclear Safety Cases.

· Working with the defueling team to help understand how moving from operating at power to long term shutdown impacts on minimum plant needed to ensure safety and the structural integrity of the reactor pressure boundary.

The actual programme of work will be tailored to suit the background and interests of the successful candidate.

KEY COMPETENCIES:

 

Studying in a STEM discipline.

 

IT literacy is essential for the role; the successful candidate will be familiar with Microsoft Office applications, and demonstrate an aptitude for using other bespoke software applications.  Good technical writing skills are also important as the role will involve writing engineering reports and technical justifications for plant modifications.

 

The personal qualities sought for this role include self-confidence, an ability to adapt into a team environment as well as the drive and determination to work independently. Strong communication skills are also important.
