Network Rail is seeking several Business undergraduates to join their Year in Industry scheme and start with them at the beginning of September 2020.

 

COMPANY BACKGROUND

The company own and operate the railway infrastructure in England, Wales and Scotland on behalf of the nation. The North West & Central route (NW&C) is the ‘backbone of Britain’, representing 24% of Britain’s Railway and comprising of 571 stations and 246.5 million rail passenger journeys annually.  In the five years to 2024, passenger demand is set to grow by 12% and freight by 18%. Major railway upgrade schemes to cater for this growth include HS2, East West Rail, Midlands Rail Hub and the Great North Rail Project. ROLE DESCRIPTIONS

009A, Sponsorship, South (Birmingham/ Manchester):

‘Network Rail’s LNW Route will deliver significant infrastructure investment over the next five years to facilitate socio/economic growth in North West & Central England and beyond. Our Sponsors lead and support teams of highly skilled professionals who successfully develop and deliver these major programmes. You will support the management of multiple stakeholders who have a financial and political interest in the success of our investment programme. These are multi-disciplined programmes and will deliver circa £5bn of Infrastructure Renewals and Enhancements, funded by government and third party funders over the next 5 years. You will help manage the benefit realisation of the project portfolio to agreed scope, time and cost’. Engineering background is not mandatory, however for some disciplines within the safety team (level crossing or energy management it would be beneficial).

 

009B, Sponsorship HS2 (London/ Euston):

‘Network Rail’s High Speed Rail Team will deliver significant infrastructure projects over the next few years to support HS2 Ltd in their work to construct a new High Speed Railway from London to Birmingham and beyond. Our Sponsors lead and support teams of highly skilled professionals who successfully develop and deliver these major projects. You will support the management of multiple stakeholders who have a financial and political interest in the success of the HS2 programme. You will support the wider team manage the sponsorship of the project portfolio to agreed scope, time and cost’.

 

009C, Area Services South (HOMS – Manchester):

You will be exposed to a number of key business activity for the route maintenance organisation. The Area Service Manager team support, facilitate and deliver over 100 work streams for the maintenance delivery units. This includes maintenance effectiveness projects such as risk based maintenance, intelligent infrastructure and on track machine strategy. You would be supporting and enabling a number of these work streams by the review and collation of data such as small-plant fund applications, analysing vehicle usage within the maintenance delivery units and supporting the wider team portfolio to help enable delivery of efficiencies for the route: (As the wider function of our team is not engineering focussed I think we would be better suited to a general YII rather than specifically an engineering based one. The tasks that I have my current YII student working on are around planning, business optimisation, data review etc.)

 

009D, P&CS Team (Midlands location):

Approximately 70% of all passenger journeys involve at least one of our managed stations. The turnover of the managed station business is around £200m per year.
There are three key areas for delivery: Operating the station for passengers and train services, managing the assets and property commercial activities. This placement focuses on Performance Improvement, with a focus on analysing Information and supporting associated reporting.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

You will be in your penultimate year at university, studying business/ related degree and predicted 2:1 min. You will have strong communication and ICT skills and an interest in the rail/ transport sector. Master’s degree students in their 2nd yr may also apply.
