Steven Taylor's YINI Placement & Apprenticeship with Rolls-Royce

Updated: Mar 22, 2019

YINI Placement Company Rolls-Royce plc

Steven undertook his YINI placement at Rolls-Royce. Find out more about his experience below:

My YINI placement year at Rolls-Royce, Inchinnan, benefitted me by giving me the opportunity participate in a CMI management course, as well as work alongside which helped me apply my learning in a real life situation. It also gave me the opportunity to experience and have a taste at what my future career would be like before I committed myself to a career. It also provided me with the opportunity to meet new friends from different companies and career paths who I still keep in contact with today.

I decided to go down the apprenticeship route because I felt that the best way to learn was by working alongside my studies. It also gave me a chance to earn, which was a bonus. I chose Rolls-Royce as it is a company that is at the forefront of new technology and provides lots of opportunities for young persons in their early career.

I moved to Derby and completed my Higher Engineering apprenticeship in 2016 and then my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2017. I am now an Experimental Project Controller where I am responsible for the technical planning of the build and strip of Rolls-Royce Experimental Engines. This is really fun as I get to see new technologies tried and tested on multi million pound assets. I have recently accepted a job in Rolls-Royce Services’ businesses where I will be doing the operational planning for our customers engines which are currently on the wing of aircraft that are flying today. This will give me the opportunity to see a different part of the company which is something that Rolls-Royce promotes and supports.
