Aspiring Management and Engineering Students Excel at YINI Contribution to the Business (CTTB) Award

EDT are delighted to announce that Taylor Aitchison has won the Scottish Contribution to the Business Awards (CTTB) for his outstanding business improvement project with Bosch Rexroth UK as part of the EDT Year in Industry (YINI) programme.

Taylor is a mechanical engineering undergraduate and will be returning to his studies at Glasgow Caledonian University later this year. Taylor commented, “I’d like to express my thanks to everyone from the EDT, YINI and Bosch Rexroth, for this opportunity and their unwavering commitment to young engineers. This award is a huge honour and unexpected given the quality of projects presented.

This has been an immensely rewarding opportunity that has given me a solid grounding of what to expect in industry. My component improvement project has opened many new avenues of engineering I hadn’t previously been exposed to. I have made many valuable contacts with various specialities: designers, suppliers and metallurgists for example. Each of these have presented unique experiences and knowledge which will stand me well in the future.

Adam MacPhee, Engineering Manager at Bosch Rexroth also commented, “Congratulations to Taylor and to all the finalists on their excellent presentations. The CTTB Awards celebrate the achievements of school leavers and undergraduates during their Year in Industry. YINI is a paid 12-month work experience programme for post A-Level/Higher/Advanced Higher and undergraduate students.

The six finalists who presented on the day alongside Taylor were Monica McGuigan with Leonardo MW, Alexandre Chazel with Bosch Rexroth, Andrew Brownlie with Viridor, Jennifer Shearer and Gavin Kitching with SP Energy Networks.

The Best Use of IT Award was presented to Jennifer Shearer by judge Fergus Keating of The Edrington Group, who donated prizes for the event. Jennifer is an undergraduate in Business Management and her project involved working on the Network Asset Management System (NAMS), the largest ever IT change project introducing a solution to improve the way that SP Energy Networks operate. The EDT Personal Development Award went to Eleanor Lee at HTA Design LLP. Eleanor will soon be starting her degree in architecture at the University of Cambridge.

The event was hosted by SP Energy Networks who has sponsored the YINI Programme for the last 18 years. SP Distribution Director Craig Arthur, said: “We have provided placements for 145 YINI students since we started supporting the scheme in 2000 and I have been very impressed with the young people I have seen coming through. It is encouraging to see so many of them choosing to return to SP Energy Networks after their studies or by direct entry through our apprentice and graduate schemes.

“This is an exciting time for our industry and we need fresh young talent with new skills and ideas to help us innovate and create the energy landscape of the future. That’s why we are proud of our two very talented YINI CTTB finalists this year. The awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the success of this year’s students and recognise the significant contribution they have made to our business.”

Other organisations supporting this year’s YINI placements in Scotland include; Bosch Rexroth, HTA Design LLP, Leonardo MW, Rolls-Royce PLC, ScotRail, ScottishPower Renewables, ScottishPower Generation, SP Energy Networks, Vallourec and Viridor.

Informing Choice

The EDT works in partnership with schools, colleges, universities and businesses to allow students from the age of twelve through to graduate level to interact with people in businesses that rely on STEM skills, providing them with the insights and role models that will allow them to make informed subject choices. Programmes can be as short as one day or as long as a year and currently engage over 30,000 students annually. EDT has a strong base of evidence showing the effectiveness of these programmes in influencing students towards STE(A)M choices and, given the right support, aspires to engage twice this number of students in STE(A)M activities to inform their career choices.

Widening participation

EDT is particularly keen to engage those who have difficulty accessing STE(A)M activities and are keen to widen participation in rural areas, islands and areas considered to be deprived of opportunity.
