Widening Participation and Informed Choice
A new Widening Participation programme has been designed by EDT to encourage pupils from under-represented groups to consider studying STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at school. Typically, pupils attending these courses will be between 11 and 15 years of age.
EDT wants to encourage participation from diverse groups and these courses will help to provide the tools, links and information to develop, improve and shape their own future.
The Widening Participation portfolio at EDT will offer exciting one-day activities at universities and schools across the UK throughout the year: they are designed to encourage creativity and innovation through hands-on practical activity focused on team-working and problem-solving.
The following specialised modules have been designed to widen participation:-
First Edition: One-day events aimed at all abilities, with the current focus on pupils who will be ‘first in family’ to consider higher education. Click here for further information.
Spectrum: One-day events aimed at ethnic minority groups of all abilities in Year 7 to 10 / S1 - S4 (11 to 15 year-olds).
Dragonfly: One-day events aimed at girls of all abilities in Year 7 - 11 / S1 - S4 (11 to 15 year-olds).
Insight: Three to five day events aimed at girls of higher ability in Year 11 - 13 / S4 - S6 (15 to 19 year-olds).
EDT Widening Participation courses are designed to be flexible to suit school requirements.
A contribution to cost may be required for some of the programmes although teachers should let us know if help with funding is required.
"The EDT Widening Participation portfolio of STEM enrichment programmes is now well established and growing annually. These "hands on" activities are designed to focus on young people from under-represented communities with the aim of raising their awareness of the opportunities available to them through careers in STEM. The day(s) help to raise the aspirations and develop the abilities of youngsters through an applied learning experience based on problem solving, creativity and innovation. The EDT will continue to promote and provide these opportunities to everyone who can benefit from them." Mark Williams, EDT Education Director.
