Jerin Rajan
Jerin took part in a Year in Industry placement at Network Rail Infrastructure Limited in 2008 before attending the University of Sheffield. He tells us all about his career path so far...
During my YINI gap year I worked for the Traction and Rolling Stock team and I was involved in several projects including a two-week Depot experience with train maintainers Serco and RVEL (Rail Vehicle Engineering Limited). The Year in Industry experience has proven beneficial and has given me a solid start in developing and shaping my future career prospects.
I am a University of Sheffield undergraduate pursuing a MEng Hons in Mechatronics. YINI experience gave me the confidence and the maturity in building myself as a professional engineer. It also allowed me to relate the academic theories of developing innovative engineering solutions within an industrial environment. I have been offered summer placement at Network Rail for the past two years, after my Year in Industry. At present, I am part of a team responsible for the Intelligent Infrastructure Programme, aiming to develop a Rail Condition Monitoring strategy for the Fixed Rail Assets. YINI experience has played a vital role in establishing links and connections with several personals within
Network Rail. The summer placement opportunity has allowed me to work in several teams and gave me the opportunity to explore different engineering functions within Network Rail.
“YINI is… the Golden Key that would open up a world of industrial experience, which boosts up your technical and professional skills”
