Laura took part in a YINI placement in 2008-2009 at Halcrow Group Ltd before attending Loughborough University to study Systems Engineering. Below she tells us about her Year in Industry experience:
After my YinI, I went on to Loughborough University to study Systems Engineering. I am sponsored by BAE Systems; I have done two summer placements whist at university, and I took a year out of academia between my second and final year to do a placement with them. I graduated in 2013 with a BEng in Systems Engineering. I received a Bursary from the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Aeronautical Society to further my studies, so I am currently studying for a postgraduate MSc degree in Systems Engineering. After this, I will join BAE Systems on their Graduate scheme.
During my YinI, I became a YinI ambassador and a STEM ambassador. Through this, I got involved with many projects and became a member of the youth board of the icould scheme. I still regularly get involved with exciting projects; recently, I have worked with F1 in Schools and the BBC’s Bang Goes The Theory. As a result I received an award for my contribution as a YinI ambassador.
YinI is one of the best opportunities available to young people straight out of school to gain vital skills, whilst having fun before going to university. It is a great way to get ahead of the rest.
