What’s it all about?

We are excited to offer you a summer school at a great modern university, in a global city with a large student population. Manchester Met has been awarded TEF silver, recognising our high quality teaching in a friendly and supportive environment. Our curriculum is focused on producing confident graduates, ready for working in industry, entrepreneurship, or a career in research.

We are as excited about your future as you are.

The School of Engineering is proud to offer courses that have a blend of research-led and industry focused curriculum, giving students the possibility to explore current and novel aspects of Design and Engineering.

This course will equip students with an understanding of the skills and knowledge to effectively develop and communicate design ideas, we will consider ergonomics of usability and interaction, product styling, CAD development and the production and use of prototypes. There will also be an opportunity to explore additive manufacturing (3D printing) within our state of the art (https://www2.mmu.ac.uk/print-city/) facilities and have a vision of opportunities within Industry 4.0 for a product designer. There will also be guest lectures from industrialists operating within the world of product design and engineering.

Students will work independently and also in a group setting – culminating in an end of course design presentation.

What will I be doing?

You will:

  • Apply your design knowledge to practical applications and use it to problem solve and create design proposals
  • Get involved with practical team-based projects and competitions
  • Be taught the theory and practice of design ideation, CAD development and rendering, additive manufacturing and 3D printing, project management, new product development (NPD), applied engineering principles, prototyping and model making and commercial product design
  • Receive talks from professionals and start-ups in design and engineering
  • Find out about degree programmes at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Work in teams on a multi-disciplinary project providing design solutions related to a theme supported by local industry
