The Industrial Cadets Awards 2018

On the 7th March 2018, the 2nd Industrial Cadets Awards took place for which GFG Foundation was the Headline sponsor. The Awards were held in London at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and were attended by the leaders of some of the UK’s top industrial companies including AkzoNobel, Yamazaki Mazak and Rolls-Royce. The awards celebrated the achievements of the young people, schools, employees and employers who take part in workplace experiences for young people that are accredited by Industrial Cadets.

This year, we were honoured to have His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales attend the awards to celebrate the achievement of all the young people, employers, schools and colleges who have been involved with Industrial Cadets, an initiative that was inspired by HRH.

HRH The Prince of Wales, reiterated his support for the scheme in a speech presented to the hundreds of guests at the awards in London. The Prince gave a short address and presented the following awards.

Julie Feest, CEO of EDT, the charity that co-ordinates Industrial Cadets says “The fact that the Industrial Cadet awards are taking place during National Apprenticeship Week and the Year of Engineering, is particularly appropriate, as our focus must be on the need for young people to find their way into careers in science, technology and engineering industry. This event has given an insight into the strength of Industrial Cadets as a tool for inspiring and guiding young people into careers in these industries, which will be the foundation for the UK’s future economic strength. The employers at the event will be greatly encouraged by the engagement of HRH The Prince of Wales and the insight they have gained into what others are also doing to help young people into these sustainable and rewarding careers.”

Abike Looi- Somoye who received the ‘Industrial Cadet of the Year Award’ from His Royal Highness, had carried out her work experience at Rolls Royce on a ‘Year in Industry’ placement, whilst taking a year out from her BEng Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leicester. Abike was also the first ever Industrial Cadet to receive a Platinum level award.

Sally Twisleton, Head of Engineering Quality at Rolls-Royce says, “Abike's performance was outstanding. Not only delivering objectives, she supported several STEM events, highlighting commitment to promoting opportunities in this field. Abike's passion for learning and development meant she really made the most of her placement.”

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters (GFG Foundation, Rolls-Royce, Unipart Manufacturing, The IET, Premier Foods, Yamazaki Mazak, RAF, AkzoNobel and The Manufacturer) who made Industrial Cadets Awards a success, and for all your continued support.

Finally, we would like to thank our Industrial Cadets Ambassadors who were officially appointed by HRH The Prince of Wales.
