EDT’s First Edition scheme reaches a record high!

EDT’s First Edition scheme is celebrating its most successful year yet! We are excited to announce that our First Edition scheme has reached a record high this year with 360 events hosted to over 25,000 young people – reaching more young people than ever before!

Since its conception in 2009 EDT’s First Edition programme has been hosting quality STEM experiences for 9-16 year olds across the UK, providing quality Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) curriculum enrichment taster experiences. These hands-on activity days are designed to excite and enlighten young people on how STEM is fun, interesting, and results in a rewarding career. Benefits of the scheme include enhancing the curriculum, providing an interactive learning experience through stimulating hands-on activities, as well as providing students with information about STEM careers and study routes available.

We are thrilled to have grown our range of hands on activities further, the highlights of this year for First Edition include launching the genetics workshop ‘Cube Creatures’, and the ‘raspberry pi robot’ challenge, adding to the existing menu of specially-designed, curriculum-linked activities. We have worked with over 350 schools, universities and colleges and supported by a range of companies including Google, the Royal Air Force, ARUP and Tata Consultancy. We also hosted our first international events – visiting British Military schools in Germany and Cyprus with the Royal Air Force.

We are always delighted to hear positive feedback from those who have been involved in our First Edition events. Find out what our partners had to say below:

“Just had to email to say what a great event - your presenter was fabulous!!!”, Karen Simmons, Head of Science at Stour Valley Community School

“Thank you so much for the visit last week, the children absolutely loved it, as did the staff! In the afternoon we did some follow up work on Newton’s laws and the buggies in my class, and all my children could talk about what they had done and how they approached the challenges.” Charlotte Vernon, Bolsover Junior School

“This is a quick note to thank you immensely for yesterday's workshop.......I have no words to thank you enough. We need these things so much in schools nowadays, considering the tight budgets we administer, the overwhelmed staff we have and the short times we can make use of. Additionally, I would say that choosing the year 9's in our school to do this for the last 3 sessions has been positive since they are the ones taking their 'Options' in a few months time. I can say as a matter of fact that because of your sessions, more students are choosing Engineering as an option, which fortunately we offer in school.”Mrs Clara L. Timpe, Teacher at John F Kennedy Catholic School

“The workshop was a brilliant success and the girls thoroughly enjoyed it – they must have told their friends as we have had two more requests to join STEM club!” - Vicki Hughes, Teacher at Stamford School.

Our growing partnership with schools, colleges, universities and companies has accelerated this achievement and helped us reach more young people across England than ever - this would have not been possible without the support of our partners. We are looking forward to continue growing First Edition and working with our supporters to help spread the STEM message, and inspire students to explore STEM further.
