Go4SET and BP
As Go4SET rolls out across the UK this year over 800 pupils are currently taking part. BP are lead sponsor of the project and are mentoring 17 teams of 6 pupils across several UK locations.
BP is the lead sponsor of the scheme, supporting the development of the nationwide programme and also providing mentors to guide individual teams through the project.
Alford Academy from Aberdeen is presenting a Go4SET team linked with BP and are participating in Go4SET for the second year running. As part of the pilot they took part in the Go4SET Water conservation project with mentors from BP. They are back again this year, taking part in the Go4SET energy project.
The team of six S2 pupils are being mentored by BP engineers from BP in Dyce and as part of their project plan to make a proposal for a major energy saving for their school. All pupils in the project attend a Go4SET launch event - Alford attended the launch at the BP offices in Aberdeen. The team has since begun to develop the project management and teamwork skills they need to complete the task successfully. Their projects and those of other teams will be assessed and displayed at the Go4SET Celebration and Assessment Day on 29th February at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen, with prizes awarded in different categories. BP support Go4SET, the Engineering Education Scheme (England) and were the founding sponsors of EDT in Scotland in 2006. Ian Duffy, BP’s manager of UK education programmes comments, ‘We believe that it is vitally important for young people to have a good understanding and enjoyment of the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as they shape the world in which we live. The Engineering Development Trust provides a number of excellent programmes that create opportunities for young people to experience the richness and diversity that a STEM based career can bring.’
BP believes that education contributes to sustainable societies by providing people with skills and knowledge. This leads to many other opportunities - such as better business leadership, advances in state governance, more innovation, cultural achievements and improved communications. Improvements in education directly benefit business by providing potential employees with higher levels of skills.
