A YINI student’s quiz team wins £75,000 on top BBC TV quiz
Craig Rouse from Northampton, who spent his Year in Industry at Rolls Royce in Derby, joined forces with fellow students at Oxford Brookes University to take on professional quizzers on the BBC2 quiz show Eggheads.
The team of 5 students, known as Beer Today, Gone Tomorrow, took on the challenge against the team of professional quizzers who included former Mastermind and Brain of Britain winners.
Craig, who is now studying Computer Science, and the team only signed up for the show after a comfortable win in a quiz at the local pub, The Standard. The Eggheads programme is hosted by Dermot Murnaghan and sees TV quiz show legends, including Judith Keppel, winner of ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Chris Hughes, winner of Mastermind and former Brain of Britain, take on a new panel of challengers each episode.
Every time the Eggheads win, the prize money increases by £1,000. But when Beer Today, Gone Tomorrow went to the studio for filming in August, they were unaware the Eggheads had enjoyed 74 successive victories - so £75,000 was up for grabs if they won.
Craig said, "To be playing for that much was a huge surprise." The captain of the team commented "I had spent a bit of time thinking about the best strategy to take on the Eggheads. I'd even drawn up a spreadsheet and watched the show a lot beforehand, so we knew their strengths and weaknesses."
The team, who now have £15,000 each, usually play in two pub quizzes a week - at Brookes’ students’ union and at The Standard.
Rolls Royce have been involved with The Year in Industry scheme for 10 years and this year placed over 40 students across the UK, in the Midlands, Bristol and Scotland. Craig Rouse worked with their Compression Systems department in Derby for his Year in Industry placement. Craig certainly left a good impression as a dependable, very focused and professional student. His manager, Andrew Jackson said he would certainly recommend him and, indeed, felt he was managerial material. As his YINI mentor during his placement, Lorraine Box couldn’t agree more. Well done Craig. For more information about The Year in Industry please visit www.yini.org.uk
