Headstart Alumni - Developing Skills for University & Beyond
An exciting new collaboration this year between the Royal Academy of Engineering and Headstart resulted in a specially devised course for young women who attended Headstart last year.
14 ex-Headstarters were invited to RAEng to spend 3 days with 3 very impressive Headstart alumni currently working with Procter & Gamble Baby Care Engineering, UK Atomic Energy Authority, and the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
They covered a wide range of topics from developing effective negotiating skills, devising personal development plans, in-depth presentation skills training and technical visits to London attractions. On the last day of this stimulating programme they were addressed by Professor Dame Wendy Hall CBE, FREng, FRS - an outstanding role model and Fellow of the RAEng.
We wish all the girls who attended the very best with all of their endeavours and with the Academy’s support hope that we are able to extend this pilot personal effectiveness programme to even more participants in the future.
“I have gained a new approach to negotiating and being confident. I feel much more confident about studying engineering at university and even more so looking forward to it”
“I had no idea what to expect but I now feel like I’ve had a huge advantage against other engineers for my life and career! Many of these things I would never even have considered but will help in so many ways”
“This training course has met and exceeded (my expectations), both through inspirational speakers and interesting and highly useful activities. It was a great bridge between A Levels and university”
