EDT participants scoop 3 awards at the Big Bang

The Big Bang, the first annual UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair was held in London on 4th – 6th March 2009 and 3 of the awards presented at the prestigious ceremony went to EDT participants.

Chris Jefferies, an Engineering Education Scheme (England) team member from Pershore High School, Worcestershire won a top award at the event, Chris is now the UK Young Technologist of the Year and will hold the title for the year. The project set by Allen Gears Ltd ‘Setting Instruments for a Proximity Probe’ asked the team to develop equipment to enable simple fitting and gapping of probes. Chris and the team accompanied the other 6 finalists in the National Science Competition to Number 10 Downing Street for a reception with Lord Drayson before the final judging panel decided upon the winner.

Tessa O’Shea from Wimbledon High School won the Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust Teachers’ Award for her passion and enthusiasm in engaging students with science, engineering, technology and maths subjects through participation in outreach schemes. Tessa has been involved with the EDT for over 18 years, working with large numbers of students in the Engineering Education Scheme in (England) whilst being a valuable member and contributor on the EDT’s National Advisory Committee.

Michael Franklin, Director, Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust was Chair of judges on the panel and presented Tessa with the award: “Tessa O'Shea shows enormous enthusiasm for delivering engineering education. Her involvement with several leading engineering education programmes, including EES, impressed the judges. Her vision for the future is sharp and she presented her ideas exceptionally well. With an engineering degree herself, she is an inspiring teacher who shows young people how exciting and worthwhile engineering is.”

Helenswood School from Hastings won The Research Councils UK (RCUK) Laboratory Prize for their Engineering Education Scheme (England) project ‘Thermocouple pin identification’ set by Deutsch Ltd. The EES team; Laurence Baggery, Emily Bates, Luke Duggen, Charlotte Grey and Ashley Rudd now have an amazing opportunity to go behind the scenes at one of three RCUK’s prestigious research laboratories. They will get the unique opportunity to tour the labs and talk to scientists working on new and advanced research.

EDT would like to extend Congratulations to the all winners and competitors involved in the Big Bang.

Estelle Rowe, Midlands Regional Director for the EDT said: "Winning the Award of Young Technologist of the Year is a tremendous achievement, not just for Chris Jefferies but is in fact a major tribute to the whole Engineering Education Scheme team. This includes the students, their very committed teacher, the link engineers at Allen Gears and the EDT support team who facilitate the whole programme. As well as the success of the team and the personal development of the students this has also brought about an efficient and cost effective solution for the company - so "EES -Consultancy by 17 year olds" really does work!"
