Go4SET successfully launches in the West Midlands in 2009
150 pupils from across the Birmingham area began the 10-week Go4SET challenge on Tuesday 13th January at the RAF Cosford Museum.
The Go4SET project was announced at the launch event and teams of six 13 and 14-year-olds from local schools will work with a teacher and a mentor from a company to investigate water usage at their school and put forward proposals to increase recycling and reduce water bills. The team’s projects will be showcased on 26th March 2009 at a Celebration and Assessment Day at RAF Cosford.
The West Midlands is a new area for Go4SET and this launch is a significant step to having all EDT schemes in the region. Estelle Rowe, EDT regional director for Midlands and Wales, said: "The launch was the first time that the pupils, teachers and their volunteer mentors all met together to work as a team
"We had more than 150 pupils, which was a tremendous response. We introduced the project and gave the students a seminar on project management skills. "The pupils and their mentors also took part in a team building exercise with limited resources - only paper and Sellotape - and had to build a helicopter landing pad that would support a certain weight. "Judging by the sound coming from the room the pupils had lots of fun doing that and also gained useful skills such as how to work in a team, listen to each other's ideas, plan a project and achieve a result in a short time frame.
"The launch of Go4SET for pupils in the West Midlands is a very exciting new project for EDT. "Based on other Go4SET experiences around the country I am sure we can expect some excellent investigations and I look forward to seeing the results."
