Information for Schools
"Connect with young engineers and scientists, develop skills and profile your employees as role models in industry."
What is Go4SET?
Developed by Engineering Development Trust (EDT), the Go4SET initiative is designed to stimulate the interest of young people in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Go4SET raises pupils' awareness of the exciting future career opportunities available in science, engineering and technology by showing that it’s not all about mind-boggling chemical equations, building concrete walls in mid-winter and soldering LEDs onto mind-numbing circuit boards.
Go4SET changes pupils’
perceptions of science and
engineering, following their
experience pupils now describe
scientists and engineers as
professional, well paid,
logical and clever.
Instead, Go4SET will provide an experience which will empower pupils to make informed decisions about their Key Stage 4/Standard Grade options particularly within the wonderful world of STEM subjects and courses.
What does it do?
The scheme provides pupils in Years 8/9 (England) and S2 (Scotland) with the opportunity of working with and being mentored by real Scientists, Engineers and Technologists chosen from the complete spectrum of STEM disciplines.
In short, pupils get the chance to pick the brains of some leading movers and shakers across the industry.
“Pupils gain a flavour of what
it is like to work as part of
a team, to solve a problem
alongside practising engineers
and gain an insight into the
world of STEM”
Simon Gladwin,
Teacher from Thomas Estley
Participating teams will be able to draw on the experience of the link company/organisation to gain an understanding of their project within a specific industrial context.
Work-related learning within an industrial enterprise context is at the core of the Go4SET experience and students benefit from personal development education, enhancing their powers of creativity and innovation.

were extremely
effective
When?
The project will begin with a launch event where teams will be introduced to the project and their company mentor. They will then receive workshops on problem solving, project management and teamwork skills to fully prepare them for the 10 week STEM experience.
Celebration Event
The project outcomes will be assessed at a celebration event where the teams are required to display and present their solutions and will be interviewed by a panel of experienced assessors drawn from a variety of areas in the field of STEM.
Each team will produce a short project report with the option of individual logbooks detailing their specific input into the project.
The scheme has a competition format and all members of successful teams will receive personalised Go4SET certificates. And if that wasn't enough to inspire students to success, formal accreditation of projects is available through the British Science Association CREST Awards!
Teams could also have the opportunity to participate in regional finals run by the British Science Association and Young Engineers.
