Information for Your Company
"Connect with young engineers and scientists, develop skills and profile your employees as role models in industry."
What is Go4SET?
Developed by Engineering Development Trust (EDT), the Go4SET initiative is designed to stimulate the interest of young people in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
What does it aim to achieve?
The scheme links pupils between the ages of 12 and 14 (Year 8/9 in England, and S2 in Scotland) with choice companies and Universities to offer an engaging and informative ten week STEM experience.
Why is it important?
The UK needs to increase the number of pupils pursuing careers in Science, Engineering and Technology. Support from Industry and business is of critical importance and can help to make an important and lasting contribution to the future of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths through inspiring the pupils to become involved at this key stage in their education.
“Go4SET provides the
opportunity to investigate real
industrial issues and to develop
innovative solutions. These
skills are important to BP as a
company, and to the energy
sector as a whole”- Ian Duffy, BP, Go4SET lead sponsor
Go4SET will empower young people to make informed decisions about their Key Stage 4/Standard Grade options particularly with regard to STEM subjects and courses and stimulate their interest in these subjects.
Go4SET changes pupils’
perceptions of science and
engineering, following their
experience pupils now describe
scientists and engineers as
professional, well paid,
logical and clever.
How will the project work?
This will be achieved by providing a real and live STEM Project which will raise the pupils' awareness and highlight the exciting future career opportunities in STEM
Work-related learning within an industrial enterprise context is at the core of the Go4SET experience and students will benefit from personal development education enhancing their powers of creativity and innovation.
The scheme has a competition format and all members of successful teams will receive personalised Go4SET certificates as recognition of their achievements.
Formal accreditation of projects is available through the British Science Association CREST Awards. Teams could also have the opportunity to participate in regional finals run by the British Science Association and Young Engineers.
When?
The project will begin with a launch event where the teams will be introduced to the project and their company mentor. Following this, pupils will embark on a ten week STEM experience to learn practical and effective industry skills.
