Discover Engineering at Sussex

University of Sussex

Headstart at the University of Sussex allows you to experience a taste of the all the engineering disciplines available at one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain. Sussex has the best of both worlds on offer to students that chose to study here - we are just minutes away from the vibrant and bustling city of Brighton and Hove, and the campus is also surrounded by the beautiful scenery of South Downs National Park.

What’s it all about?

The world and its future development are increasingly dependent on the expertise of engineers. Engineering is one of the fastest-growing employment sectors not just in the UK but globally. As an engineer, you understand how things work and how you can make them work better, faster, quieter, cleaner and more efficient. Your ability as an engineer could lead you to delivering solutions for sectors such as transport, sustainable power generation, healthcare, communications and manufacturing.

This course is therefore designed to enable you to experience the range of areas typical of a general Engineering Department at Sussex in order to aid you in either specialising in a particular streaming or helping you to decide that a broad-based engineering course is for you.

What will I be doing?

During the programme you will experience engineering as it is taught to undergraduates, with lectures, lab practicals, a team project to develop an autonomous robotic system, and take a field trip to see engineering in action. The project will use the Department’s Computer Aided Design suite, workshops and fabrication facilities and electronics labs. At the end of the course, you will present the results of your team project in a demonstration and poster session.

You will stay in University campus accommodation have the opportunity to meet with senior students, including postgraduates, to get an idea of what motivates and excites them about engineering.
