Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen's, Belfast

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen's, Belfast

Queen's University

Short introduction:

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Headstart course offers a unique opportunity to explore the chemical disciplines which are central to the development of life saving drugs, food stuffs, cosmetics and clean energy. Immerse yourself in the academic side of university life through lectures and hands-on laboratory experiments, demonstrations and design projects which bring the chemical sciences to life.

What will I be doing?:

Find out what it is like to be a university student, interact with leading academic researchers, and sample our teaching methods and resources. The course will feature challenging lectures and intensive hands-on laboratory experiments and design projects in:

  • Chemical engineering: What is sustainable energy? Make biodiesel and conduct a design project to explore aspects of its production.
  • Principles of heat transfer. Take control of a shell and tube heat exchanger to conduct an energy balance and calculate the efficiency.
  • Inorganic chemistry: Custom made materials. Make and study polymers and gels.
  • Organic chemistry: The chemistry of medicines. Synthesise a medicine and perform analyses using key instruments and techniques.
  • Physical chemistry: What makes a chemical reaction possible? Determine the activation energy of a process by adjusting experimental parameters and analysing data using computational methods.

Would this course suit me?:

Explore chemistry and chemical engineering at the only UK university to combine both subjects in one school. Through the rewarding course you will gain a greater understanding of the subjects and develop valuable laboratory and design skills. If you are considering a degree in either chemistry or chemical engineering this course will provide you with an opportunity to compare the disciplines first hand, and equip you for university life and a possible career in the chemistry or chemical engineering sectors.

What do I need to be suitable?:

If you are taking A-level chemistry or mathematics and are interested in, enthusiastic or curious about chemical science, this course if for you.
